OXNARD : Housing Authority to Seek HUD Funds

Share

Oxnard’s Housing Authority has agreed to ask federal housing officials for $2.6 million in funding over five years to add 50 units of subsidized housing to the city.

The Oxnard City Council, acting as the Housing Authority, on Tuesday approved the request for funds from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

The federal program is intended to help impoverished families achieve economic independence. Previously an optional program, the self-sufficiency program will become mandatory by October for cities receiving federal housing assistance.

Oxnard housing director Sal Gonzalez said in the application to HUD that the 50 units would help satisfy the goal of 189 additional units in the city’s three-year Housing Assistance Plan.

Oxnard now has 776 units of federally subsidized housing.
