NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON STATE : Salmon Migration Plan to Be Tested

Reservoirs at two Snake River dams in Washington state will be lowered in March to test whether that can help young salmon survive migration to the sea, the Army Corps of Engineers said. Salmon stocks have declined dramatically since hydroelectric dams were built on the Columbia-Snake river system earlier this century. The dams block adult fish swimming upstream to spawn, but many young salmon migrating to the ocean are killed when they are swept through power turbines.
