U.S. Education Secretary Lamar Alexander has asked Congress to reinstate the nation’s most prestigious award for schools.

The November cancellation of the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Awards caused a rash of protest in San Diego County and elsewhere, especially among teachers and principals who had already spent thousands of hours preparing detailed application forms.

Four of the finalists were in San Diego County: two in Poway, one in La Mesa-Spring Valley and one in San Diego.

Alexander referred to the storm of protest in his letter to the congressional education committee chairmen.
