Revocation of Bingo Parlor’s License Delayed Until Hearing

Los Angeles officials agreed Wednesday to delay revocation of the license of the city’s second largest bingo parlor until after a Feb. 28 court hearing.

Under an order issued by city Department of Social Services General Manager Robert Burns, the Woodland Hills-based Identity Inc. was to have stopped conducting bingo games Friday.

Burns alleged that the facility, where thousands of players wagered more than $3.3 million in 1991, paid its workers in violation of laws aimed at keeping bingo an amateur and charitable pastime.

The parlor, which supports a charity for disabled youth, is attempting to block the revocation order in Los Angeles Superior Court, said Identity’s attorney, Nelson E. Brestoff.

In a letter to Brestoff, Assistant City Atty. Byron R. Boeckman agreed to delay revoking the permit until after a court hearing on the matter.

Brestoff said he is appealing the revocation order on the grounds that the administrative law judge who advised Burns to revoke Identify’s license was not the same judge who conducted hearings into the matter.
