Museum Director Barrie to Address Mapplethorpe Issues

Dennis Barrie, the Cincinnati museum director who was indicted then acquitted of violating obscenity laws when he presented a controversial retrospective of Robert Mapplethorpe photographs, will speak at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art Jan. 21.
Barrie, director of the Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati, will address the issues surrounding his 1990 trial. The 7:30 p.m. lecture is titled “Robert Mapplethorpe: Freedom of Expression and the First Amendment,” and is part of the museum’s lecture series “The State of Art in the 1990s.”
General admission is $3; $2.50 for students and seniors. Because of anticipated high attendance, the museum box office will open at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are available through Ticketmaster at 278-TIXS.
