Northridge Club Not a Source of Pride

Share

I join Rose Landini and Sharon Yost to protest the “club” featuring nude entertainment in the old Breakers Restaurant building on Corbin in Northridge.

I am appalled to see that the blatant sign pictured in The Times Jan. 15 greets the eyes of anyone passing, but especially young girls and boys. Girls and young women will once more have reinforced that they are objects to be viewed upon payment by salacious men who do not consider them valuable human beings--the same type of men who feel that women “asked for it” when they are harassed or raped. The boys and young men will be much more likely to grow up with the same values as those men.

For those who think this is overreaction, that this one club and this one sign aren’t going to form or change our children’s attitudes and behaviors, I agree. It won’t. But multiply it by all the other messages on television, billboards, etc. that are degrading to women and you will begin to see the total impact made on children each day of their lives.

Steve Gamer, the club spokesman, states: “We intend on running and operating it so the community will be proud of it.” No one I am acquainted with in this community would be proud of it.
