Minnesota Vikings running back Herschel Walker and former NFL tight end Greg Harrell won berths on the U.S. Olympic bobsled team in Saturday’s push competition at Altenberg, Germany.

Another NFL player, Raiders wide receiver Willie Gault, must try again today to make the team for next month’s Winter Games at Albertville after finishing ninth in the 12-man pushoff competition Saturday.

Walker won, with a best time of 7.0394 seconds. He had the three best pushoffs of the day and was the only bobsledder to come in under 7.1. Gault was at 7.3293.

“I came to compete, and I expected to do well,” Walker said.

The pushoffs followed a week of court wranglings over whether Harrell and Gault would be allowed to try for the team.

The two, and two-time Olympic track gold medalist Edwin Moses, had claimed they weren’t properly informed of the schedule and regulations for the original trials at Lake Placid, N.Y., in July. Moses later dropped his attempt to make the bobsled team, saying he wanted to concentrate on the Summer Olympics.

Four spots were filled and the remaining berths for the two two-man and two four-man teams must be filled by Monday.
