MISSION VIEJO : Man Gets Exemption on TV Satellite Dish

Share

A homeowner has escaped a city crackdown on television satellite dishes that don’t meet municipal codes.

The City Council last week unanimously reversed a Planning Commission decision that would have required Jack Jackson to remove or relocate his 11-foot-diameter satellite dish from its perch atop a hillside home at 26242 Amapola Lane.

In September, the commission voted 4 to 1 against Jackson, saying his dish antenna was highly visible from the street, a violation of the city code.

The city is moving against at least five other residents whose satellite dishes allegedly violate the city’s visibility ordinance, said city Planning Director Clint Sherrod.

Jackson appealed the commission’s decision, and the council agreed that extenuating circumstances existed in his case.

The homeowner had erected his satellite dish more than eight years ago, long before the city incorporated in 1988. Although Sherrod said the dish also violated county regulations, Jackson sought permission from his homeowners’ association and neighbors before installing the equipment.
