From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Tensions between Serbia and newly independent Croatia are mounting, with hard-line Serbian leaders refusing to accept Croatian sovereignty. At least 10 people were reported killed in truce violations over the weekend. Croatian Radio reported that five Croatian soldiers were killed in an artillery attack on the defense lines of the central Croatian town of Gospic. Truce violations have intensified since European Community recognition of Croatia and Slovenia as independent states. State-run Belgrade Radio assailed the EC’s Jan. 15 decision effectively confirming the end of Yugoslavia’s existence.
