Breast Implant Controversy

Share

Regarding alternatives to silicone breast implants available to women who desire reconstructive surgery after breast cancer, there is a wonderful, viable alternative. Four years ago when I had to make a decision about reconstructive breast surgery, I chose the TAIF, transabdominal island flap surgery; the patient’s own tissue is used. When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, the results are much more pleasing than those of the implant, and over time the results improve rather than degrade.

Like many other women who rejected using breast implants, I was and am so grateful that this alternative exits. TAIF surgery is more involved than implant surgery; however, when one weighs the long-term results and benefits between the two, the choice is easy. I would like to see this alternative receive the publicity it richly deserves.
