Celia Barrios-Jenkins; Lawndale Activist
Burial services were held Wednesday in Culver City for Celia Barrios-Jenkins, a Lawndale community activist who was killed in a car accident last week. She was 48.
Barrios-Jenkins was chairwoman of Lawndale Special People, a city-supported group that organizes activities for handicapped children. Last year, she made an unsuccessful bid for one of two seats on the Lawndale School District’s board of trustees.
A high school dropout, Barrios-Jenkins had five children by the age of 33, when she decided to return to school and complete her education. In 1977, she was valedictorian of her class at Centinela Valley Adult School.
She was involved with the parent-teacher groups at the schools attended by her children, and was on the advisory board of R. K. Lloyde Continuation High School in the Centinela Valley Union High School District.
Barrios-Jenkins is survived by four daughters, one son and seven grandchildren.
