Homer Hummel Sr.; Former Supervisor

Homer H. Hummel, Sr., a retired manufacturing supervisor who often performed as a one-man band, has died in a Glendale hospital. He was 83.

A longtime Glendale resident, Hummel died Wednesday of complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to his wife, Marie Hummel.

Born in Corder, Mo., Hummel was a supervisor at an air-conditioning manufacturing firm before coming to California in 1958. He worked as a manufacturing supervisor for Donn Sells Co. in Los Angeles until his retirement in the early 1980s. Hummel, who had played with a band in Missouri, played saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, electronic keyboard and other instruments. He performed at functions of Glendale organizations from the time he came to California until the mid-1980s.

Hummel was a member of the Days of Verdugo Club, Glendale Chamber of Commerce and the Glendale Church of Religious Science.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Hummel is survived by his son, Homer H. Hummel Jr., of West Hills; daughters, Joan Randall and Janice Sandell-Noorthoek, both of Palos Verdes Estates; sister, Bernice Halstenberg of St. Louis, and five grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Mortuary, 1712 S. Glendale Ave., Glendale. A funeral, with burial to follow, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Wee Kirk O’Heather at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Glendale.
