A Southeast San Diego man was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for his role in an attempted Halloween robbery that ended in the death of one of the would-be robbers.

Chau T. Tran, 22, was also fined $200 by San Diego Municipal Court Judge David Danielsen, who denied a request for probation by Tran’s attorney.

Two co-defendants, Son V. Nguyen and Hung My Truong, both 20 and from San Diego, will be sentenced Jan. 30. All three pleaded guilty Dec. 19 to attempted robbery.

San Diego police had received a tip that a robbery might take place in a house in Mira Mesa and were waiting for the robbers. A group of four men showed up wearing Halloween masks and one man pulled a gun when he saw police, who then fired, killing Duc Ngo Huynh, 23, and wounding Tran and Nguyen.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Victor Nunez said Tran was the driver and was armed with a large pistol.

Tran’s attorney, Allen Bloom, told the judge his client didn’t know the other men had planned a robbery that night.
