World IN BRIEF : ZIMBABWE : Sithole Returns, Challenges Regime

Ndabaningi Sithole, 71-year-old founder of Zimbabwe’s governing party, returned from nine years of exile in the United States and promised to fight for democratic reforms. He told hundreds of jubilant supporters at Harare airport that he planned to begin campaigning at once against the government. Sithole told reporters he returned home from Silver Spring, Md., to challenge President Robert Mugabe’s party at a time of instability in the nation.
