ORANGE : Commuters to Get 30 New Bus Shelters

Share

New bus shelters are in the works for city commuters.

The City Council voted unanimously last week to seek bids from companies that provide shelters. With revenue from advertising panels, officials said the new bus stops could bring the city at least $50,000 each year while saving up to $15,000 in maintenance costs.

The city’s current shelters were purchased from the Orange County Transportation District in 1982. The shelters cost the city $11,000 to $15,000 each year to clean and repair, city officials said. Bus shelter companies have offered the city a monthly sum to allow them to install new shelters with benches, trash cans and advertising panels.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Councilwoman Joanne Coontz said. “I always wondered why we hadn’t moved sooner on it.”

The city would install at least 30 new shelters, and the shelter contractor would be responsible for cleaning, graffiti removal and other maintenance. The contractor would also pay for the electricity used to illuminate the bus stop and panel advertisements throughout the night.

The city may prohibit any advertising deemed unsuitable for display. About 10% of the ad panels will be used for public service announcements.
