Hate Crime

Share

On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, it was ironic that a member of my family was the target of a racially motivated hate crime. While the occupants were away, vandals wreaked havoc on their home, destroying all that was in it and defacing the walls with spray-painted swastikas.

The owners are an elderly couple who do not call attention to themselves. It appears that that did not matter. What mattered to these vandals was that this couple was different; they were Chinese. No matter what the purpose or point was, this act has made our family acutely aware that bigotry still exists, even in our own back yard.
