School Board Told Cause of $150-Million Shortfall

Outside accountants for the Los Angeles Unified School District have briefed board members on the cause of a surprise $150-million shortfall in this year’s already Spartan budget. The information, however, will not be made public until Monday, school board President Warren Furutani said Wednesday.

Furutani said accountants for Ernst and Young gave board members their assessment of the problem during a closed-door meeting. “It was not like the $150 million fell in just one area,” said Furutani. “It was in quite a few areas where the problems came up.”

He declined to give details, saying board members wanted to wait until their next regularly scheduled public meeting. “We had a legal closed-door meeting where we discussed the report . . . “ said Furutani. “We need to get this out to the public ASAP.”
