United Can’t Assume Pan Am’s Brazil Routes, Judge Rules: Judge Guilherme Couto de Castro of Rio de Janeiro’s 10th Federal Court suspended permission for United Air Lines Co. to fly to Brazil in place of the defunct Pan Am Corp. The judge said the carrier cannot take over the routes unless it makes good Pan Am’s debts to ex-employees, ticket holders and other creditors. United was to start flying from Miami to Rio and Sao Paulo. The judge said the Brazilian aeronautics code requires an airline substituting another to honor any debts of its predecessor.
