Wright Has Ball in Win Over UTEP

Freshman Falisha Wright received a game ball for her work on offense and defense as the San Diego State women’s basketball team defeated Texas El Paso, 82-64, Thursday.

Wright scored a game-high 22 points by making five of seven three-point shots, pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, added three assists and held the Western Athletic Conference’s leading scorer, Holly Russ, to 11 points. Russ had been averaging 25 per game.

Wright made four three-pointers and scored 17 points in the first half to give the Aztecs a 42-22 edge at intermission.

“I think she earned her dinner tonight,” SDSU Coach Beth Burns said.

The Aztecs remained perfect in the WAC at 4-0 and improved to 12-5 overall. UTEP fell to 7-10, 0-4.

Kieishsha Garnes, SDSU’s leading scorer this season, scored 20 points, and Michelle Suman added 16.

BASEBALL

The Padres signed first baseman Phil Stephenson to a contract with their triple-A Las Vegas team Thursday. Stephenson will be invited to the major league camp on a nonroster basis. Stephenson, 31, was on the disabled list most of the 1991 season, undergoing surgery Aug. 16. He has 130 days of major league experience over two seasons.

FOOTBALL

Palomar College’s Tamasi Amituanai, a 6-3, 340-pound defensive tackle, has orally committed to play next season at Arizona. A former All-American at Vista High, Amituanai is a two-time defensive player of the year in the Mission Conference and is a first team all-state and All-American selection.

Palomar wide receiver/quarterback Choo-Choo Walker and receiver Myron Wise have committed to play at Memphis State.
