Arvo Ylppo, 104; Cut Infant Mortality Rate
Arvo Ylppo, 104, a pediatrician who directed the program that gave Finland the lowest infant mortality rate in the world. From 1925 to 1957, he headed the Children’s Castle Hospital in Helsinki, which specializes in pediatric neurology and psychiatry. His work helped give Finland an infant mortality rate of fewer than one infant per 1,000 births. He later worked as a consultant pediatrician and treated patients privately.
