The Cal State Northridge School of the Arts is one of five schools selected to receive a $100,000 grant from the California Arts Project.

CSUN’s grant will be used to sponsor a two-week institute in July to help public school teachers improve curriculum and reaching in the arts.

About 90 teachers will learn new strategies for teaching visual arts, music, theater and dance, said Philip Handler, dean of the CSUN School of Arts.

“Ideally, teachers will then go back to the classrooms and implement art programs,” he said.

After the institute, assistance to teachers to help them implement the programs will be provided.

“Not only do we want better teaching in the arts, we also want more time spent teaching the arts,” Handler said.

Catherine Dezseran, professor of theater at CSUN, is responsible for developing programs and materials for the institute.
