Washington’s Wallet Stolen From Museum
George Washington’s weathered, brown leather wallet has been reported missing from a museum on the grounds of the New Jersey state Capitol, police said.
The first President’s wallet was reported missing Friday from a display case in the Old Barracks Museum, which housed Hessian troops during the Revolutionary War, state police superintendent Justin Dintino said.
The 10-inch-long wallet had a brass clasp inscribed “GW 1775” and contained a 1776 two-thirds dollar bill and a 1779 $1 bill. Asked the value of the items, a museum spokesman replied, “priceless.”
The wallet has been on loan to the museum since November, 1990, from a private collector.
