From Staff and Wire Reports

Danny Everett bettered the world indoor 400-meter record for the second time Sunday, and this time it probably will count.

Everett was timed in 45.02 seconds at the Stuttgart international track meet in Germany, taking three-hundredths of a second off the 4-year-old record held by Germany’s Thomas Schoenlebe.

Everett had bettered Schoenlebe’s world record two years ago at Stuttgart, but his performance was not recognized because of a lane violation.

“I didn’t come here to run a world record, but this atmosphere stimulated me,” said Everett, the 1988 Olympic bronze medalist.

Steve Lewis, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist, finished second in 45.53.

Other U.S. winners included: Andre Cason in the 60 meters (6.46, one-hundredth of a second off the indoor record he set last week); Johnny Gray in the 800 (1:45.08); Llewellyn Starks in the long jump (27 feet 4 1/2 inches), and Floyd Heard in the 200 (20.93), beating 1984 Olympic champion Carl Lewis (20.97). Lewis was running in borrowed shoes because his baggage didn’t arrive.

Germany’s Katrin Krabbe, the world champion at 100 and 200 meters, suffered an ankle injury while shopping Saturday and didn’t compete. Irina Privalova of Russia won the women’s 200 in 22.36 and the 60 in 7.04.
