After a brief intermission, as they say in the movie business, our series of columns on video stores is resuming this week. This time we went to Simi Valley to look at the Viddy-O-Wizard store at 5956 Los Angeles Ave., in the Lincoln Plaza.

* Atmosphere: For starters you’ve got to give the owners credit for coming up with a catchy name, one that conveys a kind of friendly, lighthearted approach to things. Flowers on the various display cases and easy listening music piped into the relatively small building enhance this feeling. And it doesn’t hurt that the owners are on a first-name basis with some of their customers.

* Selection: There’s the ordinary, and there’s the not so ordinary. Let’s concentrate on the latter. Probably the aviation section is the most unusual. There’s the video about test pilots, the compilation of air show footage and the video on the world’s aerobatic teams. (Tucked in with the flight videos was one on Nostradamus, presumably by mistake--unless of course he predicted air travel.) The store also features a section of PBS/educational videos. It includes “The Astronomers” series, “The American Indian Collection” and the “So You Wanna Be a Gambler” video. Some things are quite educational.

When it comes to the blockbuster releases, the secret at Viddy-O-Wizard is quantity. There are 30 copies of “Terminator 2” in stock, as well as 20 “City Slickers,” and about 15 of all of the other ultra-popular releases.

* Pick of the Week: Our choice is the Pippi Longstocking videos--hey, it brings back childhood memories. If that’s not good enough, how about “John and Yoko--A Love Story,” found in the romance section?

* Decor: Again, there is the usual and the unusual. There are plenty of movie posters and such, which you’re likely to find in any video store. But at Viddy-O-Wizard there are also a good number of advertisements lying around. There were Tupperware ads, ads for a video duplication business, a Little League promotion and a flyer from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

* Added feature: Music cassettes--on sale for $5 each. We didn’t rummage through the selection, but we did spot one from the “China Beach” television series and another from Milli Vanilli.

* Drop box: Yes, there is one, and it’s open 24 hours.

* Rental Costs: The one-day rates are $2.47 for new releases, $2.10 for other major titles, and $1.47 for those in the children, family and other miscellaneous categories. Additional charges include a $1 reservation fee on weekends and holidays and a $1 rewind charge. Interestingly, the store offers an optional 10-cent “film damage waiver insurance.”

On Sunday, the Ojai Film Society will present the Italian production “Story of Boys and Girls,” at the Ojai Playhouse. Directed by Pupi Avati, it’s the story of two Italian families from distinctly different classes brought together by impending matrimony. It is set in 1936, with fascism in full swing. Show time is 4:30 p.m. The playhouse is located at 145 E. Ojai Ave. Admission is $6.
