Proposed Cuts for Welfare Moms

Share

Gov. Pete Wilson is blaming welfare mothers for the state’s budget deficit. I must tell you I was disgusted when I heard about Mr. Wilson’s proposed “taxpayers’ protection plan.” He’s planning to cut AFDC checks by 25%, aside from the $30 cut we’ve already received.

I became a teen mother when I was 16. I’m now trying to survive on my AFDC check. I’m back in school studying for my high school diploma, which I’ll be getting in June. Yes, I had my baby out of wedlock, but I’m going to make something out of my life! I could barely make it with what I’m getting now. I’m scared if these cuts go through, my 2-year-old child and I will be at a very high risk of becoming homeless. I won’t be able to pay my rent, or my bills, let alone continue to stay in school. For me AFDC checks mean another chance, not an “insidious incentive” to become a mother of six children.

I understand the “rich” people have tax breaks on their yachts, country clubs, and unnecessary luxuries, while I’m out here trying to stick to school, and in danger of becoming homeless any time now.

Teen mothers need quality, low-cost child care to be able to go back to school and become successful career women. Where can you find quality child care for $50 a month, Mr. Wilson?

I think that if you really wanted to stop teen pregnancy you would advocate sex education and condom distribution.
