Israel Army Court Gives Palestinian 410 Years in Prison
A Palestinian has been sentenced to 12 consecutive life terms in prison plus 50 years for heading a pro-PLO group that killed a dozen Arabs accused of collaborating with Israel.
The unusually stiff sentence meted out by an Israeli military court last week would make Adel Ismail Jabari, 24, ineligible for parole. A life sentence is usually equal to 30 years, making his total sentence 410 years.
Jabari, of Rafah in the occupied Gaza Strip, led a cell of the Black Panthers, an uprising group allied with the Fatah faction of PLO chairman Yasser Arafat.
About 495 Arabs have been slain on suspicion of collaboration during the 4-year uprising against Israeli occupation. Israelis have killed 882 Arabs, and 77 Israelis have died in the unrest.
Israeli military rules allow the death penalty for murder, but army judges have never imposed capital punishment.
