Stan Thomas, a tackle for the Chicago Bears, was shot in the head while driving in San Diego, but doctors said after surgery that the wound to the right forehead wasn’t life-threatening. They said that Thomas, 23, might be released as early as today.

Police gave this account: The early morning shooting occurred after Thomas and two friends left a Pacific Beach bar, where the three had reportedly been involved in a confrontation with a bar patron. Thomas was driving his car in the Pacific Beach area when a car carrying three men suddenly veered in front of Thomas’ car, and a gunman leaned out of the front passenger window and fired five times at Thomas’ car. One of the bullets struck the windshield and deflected, striking Thomas.
