COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Duke, Oklahoma State Hold Top Spots in Poll; UCLA 3rd

UCLA was the only top five team to survive last week without a loss, but the Bruins moved up only one place to No. 3 in this week’s Associated Press poll, which features Cincinnati for the first time since 1978.

UCLA (17-1), the recipient of two first-place votes, is ranked behind No. 1 Duke and Oklahoma State, both of which suffered their first defeats. Duke (18-1), the defending national champion, was beaten on the road by North Carolina, 75-73, last Wednesday. That same night, Oklahoma State (21-1) lost at Nebraska, 85-69.

Indiana (17-3), sixth last week, and Kansas (17-2) tied for fourth, followed by North Carolina (17-3), Arizona (17-3), Ohio State (16-3), Missouri (16-3) and Syracuse (16-3).

Arkansas (17-5), which lost at Tennessee and Memphis State, fell from fifth to 11th.

Michigan State (15-4) is 12th, followed by USC (16-3), which moved from 16th to 13th on the strength of victories over Washington State and Washington.

Tulane (18-2), Nevada Las Vegas (20-2), Alabama (19-4), Michigan (14-5), Connecticut (16-4), Kentucky (16-5) and Louisiana State (14-5) round out the top 20.

Texas El Paso (18-3) is 21st, followed by North Carolina Charlotte (16-4), Florida State (15-6), Cincinnati (17-3) and Seton Hall (13-6).

MONDAY’S GAMES

North Carolina State (9-13, 3-6) made an Atlantic Coast Conference-record 18 three-point baskets, but No. 23 Florida State (16-6, 8-4) beat the Wolfpack, 87-79, at Raleigh, N.C. . . . Eric Mobley of Pittsburgh (15-9, 7-4) scored 15 points in a 77-68 Big East victory over Villanova (8-12, 5-6) at Pittsburgh. . . . Ron Bayless of Iowa State (17-5, 3-3) scored 23 points in a 96-82 Big Eight victory over Colorado (10-9, 1-5) at Ames, Iowa.
