SUNSET LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Edison Closing In on Championship

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A week ago, Edison boys’ basketball Coach Jon Borchert felt there was still a long way to go to the Sunset League championship.

But Wednesday night, the Chargers shortened their journey to the top considerably. A 75-52 victory over visiting Fountain Valley clinched a share of the league title for Edison, which can win the championship outright with a victory at Huntington Beach Friday.

Edison (16-7, 9-2) is a game ahead of Marina, which plays Santa Ana in Friday’s regular-season finale. Last season, the Chargers shared the league title with Marina and Huntington Beach.

“We’re in good position now,” Borchert said. “We still had four games left after we beat Marina (last Wednesday to move into first), and anything could have happened.”

Edison used a number of quick scoring runs to control the game against Fountain Valley (11-12, 6-5). The Chargers jumped to leads of 12-4 and 16-9 in the first quarter behind center Mike Williams, who scored eight of his 14 points in the quarter.

Fountain Valley rallied to 19-16, but Edison opened the second quarter with an 11-3 streak to take a 30-19 lead. Brandon Jessie scored seven of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter to help Edison extend the margin to 45-29.

“We played well in spurts tonight, but overall, I think we’re playing our best ball of the year now,” Borchert said. “We’ve improved consistently over the season.”

Borchert said Edison’s Josh Serafin played his best game of the year, scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds. Serafin scored eight points in the fourth quarter, including two layups that followed steals.
