GOLF : Strange Finishes in Dark, in Lead
Curtis Strange, who feels like he’s been in the dark for three years, had a 10-foot birdie putt to take the first round lead in the Northern Telecom Open when darkness came Thursday.
Strange, in a slump since his victory in the 1989 U.S. Open, was six-under-par and tied for the lead with Bruce Fleisher when play was halted by darkness.
“I played solid,” said Strange, who did not have a bogey in the 16 holes he played. “It was the best I’ve played in a long time.”
Fleisher, 43, a retread veteran who scored his first career victory last season, also was unable to complete play in the rain-delayed round. He was six-under with three holes to go.
Strange, Fleisher and 64 others are scheduled to return this morning to complete the first round before the second round begins.
Mark Calcavecchia, the recent winner of the Phoenix Open, withdrew with back problems after 15 holes.
