NATION IN BRIEF : OREGON : Problems at Nuclear Plant Draw Fine

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission fined a utility $100,000 for failing to correct safety violations at the Trojan nuclear plant near Portland, Ore. The NRC cited six problems involving valve maintenance, radiation protection and fire protection. The utility will not contest the fines, PGE vice president Jim Cross said. The NRC last week gave its approval to restarting the Trojan plant, which has been idle for 11 months because of cracked and corroded steam generator tubes.
