Elias Leads in Race to Manzanillo

Share

Antonio Elias’ modernized Santa Cruz 70 Ole led the ninth biennial race to Manzanillo on the first day out Saturday as the fleet struggled in light southeast headwinds of 6 to 7 knots.

The Mexico City businessman scored his first big victory in the Long Beach-to-Cabo San Lucas race last November after lightening the boat and adding new sails and rigging.

Ole was only 115 miles along the 1,100-nautical mile track after 24 hours. Roy Disney’s SC 70 Pyewacket was 116 miles along but farther off the rhumb (direct) line to the west.

Next came the Doug Baker/Dick Pennington Cheetah, Brack Duker’s Evolution and Les Crouch’s Maverick.

Thursday’s five starters were led by Robert Kahn’s Jano, a 43-foot Frers, which was 49 miles ahead of Ole.
