Arizona State Wins on Foul Shots, 71-70
Stevin Smith sank four free throws in the final 18.5 seconds and Arizona State survived a second-half collapse to defeat Washington State, 71-70, Sunday in a Pacific 10 Conference basketball game.
The Sun Devils (14-9 overall, 5-6 in the Pac-10) led by 19 points in the first half and still had a 58-44 lead with 11:07 left in the game, but scored only 12 points the rest of the way.
Washington State (16-8, 4-7) scored the next six in a row and capped a 19-7 run when Neil Derrick made a free throw with 2:50 left to make it 65-63.
Lynn Collins’ basket with 1:12 left gave the Sun Devils some breathing room, and Smith’s free throws down the stretch helped complete a two-game sweep of the Cougars this season.
Washington State’s Tyrone Maxey hit a 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer.
Smith and Lester Neal had 15 points each for Arizona State.
