Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Labor Group Urges Asylum for Haitians

The AFL-CIO urged Congress to pass legislation granting temporary asylum to all Haitian “boat people.” It said Haiti’s military-backed government has killed, beaten or jailed several labor activists. The labor group’s executive council, meeting in Miami, denounced the Bush Administration’s policy of forced repatriation for most of the thousands of Haitian refugees.
