PYONGYANG : North-South Meet

The prime ministers of North and South Korea are meeting in the capital of the Communist North through Friday in an attempt to work out details of potentially historic accords reached in December on developing economic and human exchanges and carrying out inspections of each other’s nuclear facilities to ensure that neither develops nuclear weapons.

Expectations are high that a date also may be set for a first-ever meeting between the leaders of the North and South, President Kim Il Sung of North Korea and President Roe Tae Woo of South Korea. About 40,000 American troops are stationed in South Korea near a demilitarized zone that separates about 900,000 troops of the North and 625,000 under arms in the South.
