Harry Shearer’s column on what Mikhail Gorbachev will do now that he is unemployed (“Take Him to Our Ex-Leaders,” Jan. 19) overlooked the fact that the former Soviet leader already has a burgeoning career posing as the “before” in hair-transplant ads that have appeared in The Times, with Boris Yeltsin featured in the “after” shot. While this use of their faces was no doubt unauthorized, just think of the commercial possibilities.
Gorbachev could make a fortune if American Express brought back their “you may not remember me, but I used to be. . . .” campaign.
