What a fine review of “The Girls in the Balcony” (Feb. 9)!

Recently I conducted a funeral for an 88-year-old woman who at 18 had been a reporter for the Ottawa Citizen (the society page, of course). Without much careful thought I made some comment in the eulogy about how rare she must have been in those days. But it is clear that even an enlightened male conscience cannot be awake to the full magnitude of the discrimination against women. Every revelation of it is necessary, and the struggle, as in the case of all forms of discrimination, is, unfortunately, never-ending.

I don’t know why we all have been given a conscience that insists on being so selective in its power of sensitivity. Perhaps it is a reminder that we all need one another if we are ever to eliminate every boundary in the geography of the conscience.
