Rain Expected in Southland
After a nine-day stretch of summer weather and sunny skies, a cold front was to move into the Southland this weekend, dropping half an inch of rain along the coast and up to three inches of snow in the mountains, forecasters said.
The leading edge of the front was expected to bring rain this afternoon, followed by mostly cloudy skies Monday, the National Weather Service said.
“There is a potential for a pretty good snowstorm in the mountains. It will likely bring the snow level down to 5,000 feet . . . but this definitely shouldn’t be a flood event,” said Steve Burback, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.
A 10-day series of storms last month dumped nearly eight inches of rain in downtown Los Angeles, killed at least seven people and caused record flooding.
Today’s storm is expected to bring gusty winds of up to 20 m.p.h and temperatures in the 60s, and into the mid-50s on Monday. In the mountains, travelers should be prepared for winter conditions and carry tire chains.
Another mild storm bringing thunder and scattered light rain was predicted to move into the area Wednesday night and disperse by Thursday.
