SAVE THE COUGAR: Environmentalists seeking endangered species status for Orange County’s diminishing population of mountain lions (Times Magazine), take note. An artificially inseminated Florida panther gave birth to a cougar kitten at a Charlotte County wildlife sanctuary. . . . The big cats, an endangered species native to the Everglades, do not breed well in captivity. Only one in 10 treated cats gave birth, but the method has produced healthy young in a cheetah, a leopard and a tiger. “The technique works,” says Tom Logan of the state’s fish and game agency.
