Polaroid’s Pola-Pan 35-millimeter black-and-white-slide film has been around since the mid-’80s, but it is just beginning to attract a wide non-professional audience. Armed only with a box of slide mounts and a hand-crank processing unit (anywhere from $115 to $170), the intrepid explorer and amateur photographer can process this film in the desert, jungle, wherever. Pola-Pan creates moody, slightly grainy shots that look almost Victorian; the film costs about $15 for a 36-exposure roll, and some photo shops will develop the film for you.
