Athletes from the former Soviet team, still forming a superpower under a different banner, finished with a record 12 gold medals in 27 events at the European Indoor Track and Field Championships at Genoa, Italy.

The Commonwealth of Independent States also earned eight silver medals and seven bronzes.

Sweden’s Patrik Sjoberg won the European high jump title at 7 feet 9 3/4 inches, then missed three times at eight feet.

American-born Sandra Myers gave Spain a gold medal in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 51.21 seconds.
