Les Jones, coach of Britain’s men’s track and field team, was found dead in his hotel room Monday after the European indoor championships. He was 48.
Jones failed to answer a wake-up call Monday, British track officials said. Team doctor Malcolm Brown said Jones died of an apparent heart attack in his sleep.
Jones attended a team party Sunday night to mark the end of the three-day championships in which Britain’s Jason Livingston (60 meters) and Matthew Yates (1,500 meters) won gold medals.
Jones became men’s coach after the 1988 Olympics at Seoul and guided the team to the championship in the European Cup in 1989. He was due to retire after the Summer Games at Barcelona.
