The District of Columbia Council unanimously approved a resolution urging the Washington Redskins to change their nickname to one deemed less offensive.
Councilman William Lightfoot, who authored the non-binding resolution, said before the 13-0 vote that the name Redskins “is racially insensitive to the feelings of Native Americans.”
“We should set the example by not being passive participants in perpetuating racial or cultural stereotypes,” said Lightfoot, who is black.
Redskin owner Jack Kent Cooke has said he does not find the team name offensive and will not change it.
