The military government won Mauritania’s first direct legislative elections since independence in 1960, capitalizing on an opposition boycott of the voting, early returns indicated in Nouakchott. The multi-party elections were the first since independence in 1960, but only four of 233 legislative candidates did not support President Sid Ahmed Ould Taya, who seized power in a military coup seven years ago and won a disputed presidential election in January.
