Nation IN BRIEF : ILLINOIS : Five Gang Leaders Given Prison Terms
Five leaders of the El Rukn street gang were sentenced to long prison terms after a crackdown on the gang police say controlled drug trafficking on Chicago’s South Side for 25 years. U.S. District Judge Harold Baker handed down the sentences on a variety of racketeering, narcotics and weapons charges. Prosecutors said the El Rukns used murder and other terrorist tactics to control drug traffic. Melvin Tillman, 35, got the stiffest sentence--life in prison--because he had two prior narcotics convictions. The others received terms of 33 to 55 years.
