Joe Amato won his first top-fuel title of the National Hot Rod Assn. season, defeating Kenny Bernstein in the final of the Slick 50 Nationals at Baytown, Tex.
The defeat marred an otherwise-perfect day for Bernstein, who made the quickest quarter-mile run, 4.846 seconds, in NHRA history in a semifinal victory over Cory McClenathan. The previous mark of 4.884 had been set Saturday by Michael Brotherton.
