Antitrust Judgment Goes Against NFL
The NFL is liable for damages for fixing the salaries of players on clubs’ developmental squads, in violation of antitrust law, a federal judge ruled Tuesday in Washington.
The 235 class-action members were “robbed . . . of any bargaining power” by the NFL’s decision to pay them a flat $1,000 a week in 1989, U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth said.
The judge said a trial must be held to determine the amount of damages to be paid by the NFL.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league will appeal Lamberth’s ruling.
