Israeli troops shot and killed three armed Palestinians in a gun battle Sunday in a West Bank refugee camp, the army said.

It said the men had been wanted in connection with shooting at army patrols and Israeli vehicles.

A fourth Palestinian was injured in the shootout at the Askar refugee camp near Nablus. There were no Israeli casualties, a statement said.

Soldiers recovered an automatic rifle and a false identity card from one of the slain men, the army said.

After the shootout, a grenade was thrown at troops enforcing a curfew, and the soldiers fired at the source of the attack, the army said. It did not elaborate.

The army did not say exactly how the clash began. An Israeli colonel identified only by his first name, Araleh, said the troops had been assigned to find those behind a recent wave of shooting attacks.
