PARIS : Another Test for Mitterrand

Share

French voters go to the polls Sunday for regional elections expected to reflect growing dissatisfaction with French President Francois Mitterrand and his governing Socialist Party.

Opinion polls so far show the biggest gainers in the contest for political leadership in France’s 22 continental regions are the extreme right-wing National Front Party of Jean-Marie Le Pen and two ecology-oriented political movements, the Greens (Verts) and Generation Ecologie. The xenophobic, anti-immigrant National Front is expected to have its strongest showing ever in the southern regions.
