Seniors Housing Project Advances

Share

A long-sought senior citizens housing complex moved a step closer to reality with the Carson City Council’s conceptual approval of a project Tuesday.

Council members authorized the purchase of about two acres of vacant land on Avalon Boulevard between 221st and 223rd streets. The land will in turn be sold to developer Thomas Safran & Associates.

The proposed 88-unit seniors complex would be partly built with a $5-million Redevelopment Agency loan. However, the site must first be cleaned of gasoline contamination caused by a leaking underground storage tank. Cleanup estimates range from $75,000 to $1 million.

The city will pay up to $250,000 of the cleanup costs.

Councilwoman Kay A. Calas, who has lobbied for the project, praised the council’s decision. “Thank God it’s passed,” Calas said. “We need it really, really badly.”
